Students will investigate the economic, social, religious, and political conditions of the early colonies of New Amsterdam and New York which can trace their roots back to the 1600's as Europeans sailed to the New World in search of many things, chief among them...monetary gain and religious freedom. Students will read and discuss articles, books, graphs, Internet web sites, and primary sources which depict the colony's institutions under Dutch and English rule. As the colonies struggled to grow and prosper, seeds of discontent were sewn by greedy merchants, religious zealots, and overbearing monarchs. The students will research and debate the benefits and difficulties of these time periods as they progress towards understanding the economic, social, religious, and political conditions of the colonies of New Amsterdam and New York during the 1600s through the early 1700s.
